For Admission in Fall 2013

Important Admission Deadlines

  • An applicant whose admissions file is complete by March 1, will receive a decision letter postmarked no later than March 31.  Applicants whose admissions files are not complete until after March 1 cannot be guaranteed a decision by March 31.

  • Application files completed by December 31 will receive full consideration for merit-based scholarships.  Application files completed after December 31 will be considered for scholarship assistance to the extent funds remain available.

  • Applicants for student loans should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) by March 15.
  • International J.D. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review our webpage for international prospective students before beginning the application process.

Application Instructions

To Apply for Admission to the School of Law

  1. Submit an application with required attachments.  You must apply electronically through LSAC (if applicable). A screen reader compatible version of our application is available via our Application webpage. No application fee is required.  You must comply with the electronic certification instructions when submitting your application. For technical assistance with the online application form available via LSAC, contact the Law School Admission Council at 215.968.1393.   2. Register for the Credential Assembly Service (CAS).  Have a reportable LSAT score on record with LSAC, and arrange to have transcripts sent to LSAC from every college or university you have attended.  Direct LSAC to send a report to Washington and Lee.

    If you completed any postsecondary work outside the US (including its territories) or Canada, you must submit transcripts from foreign institutions for evaluation by LSAC's Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS).  This service is included in the Credential Assembly Service registration fee; the Transcript Request Form is available online from LSAC.  (The only possible exception to this requirement is for work completed as part of a study-abroad, consortium, or exchange program sponsored by a US or Canadian institution.  This exception applies only if the work is clearly indicated as having been part of such a program on the transcript provided by a US or Canadian institution.)  A Foreign Credential Evaluation will be completed by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), which will be incorporated into your Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS) report.

    If your undergraduate instruction was conducted in a language other than English, you must contact the Education Testing Service (ETS) and request that your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score be sent to LSAC.  LSAC's TOEFL code for the Credential Assembly Service is 0058.  Your score will be included in the Foreign Credential Evaluation document that will be included in your LSAC Law School Report.  Questions about the Credential Assembly Service should be directed to LSAC at 215.968.1001, or LSACINFO@LSAC.org.

  3. Obtain two letters of recommendation.  Because we seek to evaluate your potential as a law student, faculty recommendations that discuss your academic performance are particularly helpful.  We strongly encourage you to use the LSAC Letter of Recommendation Service.  This service is included in your Credential Assembly Service registration.  Letters submitted through the LSAC Service are included in your law school report.  We will accept additional letters of recommendation, but will consider your file complete when two have been received.

  4. Once your application has been submitted, you must inform the admissions office of any changes in the information provided, or any new event or information that would have been required to be disclosed had it occurred or been known on the date the application was submitted.  For details, please refer to Section VI of the Application and the certification above your signature.

  5. If you intend to apply for educational loans, including subsidized or unsubsidized Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans, and College Work-study, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 15.  The University's Financial Aid Office may request supplemental financial information.  Questions regarding educational loans should be directed to the University's Office of Financial Aid at 540.458.8715.  All applicants for admission are considered for merit-based scholarship assistance; no separate application form is required.
