Study Abroad Opportunities

Exchange Program

Washington and Lee offers an exchange program with Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany. Bucerius Law School is Germany’s first private law school, and its focus is on preparing lawyers for global practice. All Bucerius students are required to study for one semester at a foreign law school; U.S. law schools in the Bucerius consortium send selected students for a semester of study in Hamburg. Classes are taught in English.

W&L students have taken the following courses at Bucerius:

 - The Law of the European Union
 - German Law Survey Course
 - International Commercial Arbitration
 - Comparative Law
 - Products Liability, Law & Procedure
 - International Conflict of Laws
 - The Law of the World Trade Organization
 - Transnational Business Problems
 - Regulation and Deregulation

For the 2004 - 2005 academic year, the law school hopes to offer additional exchange programs with the following institutions:
University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada
Printed material on the Western Ontario program is available in the admissions office.

Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland
 

Summer Study Abroad

Washington and Lee does not sponsor a summer study abroad program, but W&L law students may earn academic credit for coursework taken as part of an ABA-approved program offered by any other law school, with prior permission of the academic dean.
