
Penn graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 2009 with a degree in English and political science. His activities at W&L include Vice Chair of the Moot Court Board, Co-Chair of the Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series, and Pupil in the Ted Dalton Inn of Court. A participant in the judicial externship program, Penn serves as extern to the Honorable G. Steven Agee, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. As a 2L, Penn won the Robert J. Grey, Jr. Negotiations Competition, worked as a research assistant to Professor Christopher J. Whelan, and was a staffwriter for the Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment. He interned for the Honorable Michael F. Urbanski for the Western District of Virginia during his 1L summer and worked as a summer associate at K&L Gates and Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog this past summer.
Topics and dates for the Burks Scholar Writing Fellows for the Fall 2012 Semester are below. Tutorial Hours are optional. Students are encouraged to meet with a Writing Fellow to discuss the specific topic of that week, but are also free to use the Tutorial Hours to discuss any writing related issue. Students may also make appointments for individual instruction by contacting a Burks Scholar.
