Legal Aid

Harrisonburg Supervisor: John Whitfield

Lexington Supervisor:  Robin Mayer

Lynchburg Supervisor: Renae Patrick

Roanoke Supervisor: Henry Woodward

Law School Supervisor: Mary Z. Natkin

Blue Ridge Legal Services (Lexington and Harrisonburg) and the Virginia Legal Aid Society, Inc. (Lynchburg) provide free civil legal services to indigent persons. The offices do not take "fee-generating" cases (e.g. personal injury); rather, they concentrate mostly on Domestic Relations, Landlord/Tenant, Consumer Issues, and Public Benefits issues. Four students are placed in the Lexington office, and two students are placed with the Lynchburg office for one year term. Each intern has his or her own caseload working with the supervising attorney.

Job duties include client contact, research, alternative dispute resolution where appropriate, and, if third-year practice certified, conducting a hearing in court or before an administrative tribunal. Students develop knowledge in several substantive areas in addition to serving an unmet legal need in the community.
