The Search Committee is pleased to announce the finalists for the position of Dean of the Law School. Each finalist will visit Washington and Lee in the coming weeks to meet with faculty, students, staff and other members of the W&L community.
The finalists are:
Marion Crain, Wiley B. Rutledge Professor of Law and Director of the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Work and Social Capital, Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. Professor Crain is an expert in labor and employment law and has authored or coauthored a labor law casebook, an employment law casebook, and numerous law review articles and book chapters on labor and employment law, labor unionism, and the working poor. She currently serves as a Faculty Fellow to the Provost.

Nora Demleitner, Dean and Professor of Law, Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Dean Demleitner’s teaching and research focuses on the areas of criminal, comparative, and immigration law. Her special expertise is in sentencing and collateral sentencing consequences. She is the lead author of Sentencing Law and Policy, a major casebook on sentencing law. She also is an editor of the Federal Sentencing Reporter, and serves on the executive editorial board of the American Journal of Comparative Law.

Michael Gerhardt, Samuel Ashe Distinguished Professor of Constitutional Law and Director of the UNC Center on Law and Government, University of North Carolina School of Law. Professor Gerhardt is one of the nation's leading experts on constitutional law and the author of several books, including The Power of Precedent. He has advised Congress on a range of constitutional issues and participated in the confirmation hearings for five of the nine justices currently on the U.S. Supreme Court.

David Scheffer, Mayer Brown/Robert A. Helman Professor of Law and Director of the Center for International Human Rights, Northwestern University School of Law. Professor Scheffer teaches in the areas of International Human Rights Law and International Criminal Law. He was previously the U.S. Ambassador at Large for War Crimes Issues (1997-2001) and led the U.S. delegation in U.N. talks establishing the International Criminal Court. During the Clinton Administration, he served as senior adviser and counsel to the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Madeleine Albright.
