James William Horne StewartBiographyJames W. H. Stewart served a one year appointment as assistant professor of law and law librarian at Washington and Lee University in 1953-1954. He returned to this institution in 1957 as associate professor of law and law librarian. He was relieved of the librarian duties in 1960. In 1966, he was elevated to professor of law, the title he held at his death in 1987. Stewart taught Accounting, Legal Bibliography and Brief Making, Briefmaking and Oral Argument, Insurance, Legal Ethics, Property III, Taxation I , II & III, Federal Income Tax and Taxation, Federal Taxation of Business, Family Wealth Transactions I & II, Taxation of Gifts, Trusts, and Estates, and Wills and Administration. James William Horne Stewart was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and, following military service in World War II, graduated from the University of Alabama in 1949. He received his LL.B degree from Washington and Lee University in 1952 and his LL.M degree from Harvard in 1953. Stewart attended the Academie de Droit International at The Hague in 1952, and, as a Fulbright Scholar, the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1955-1956. He clerked for Justice Hugo Black in the 1954-1955 Supreme Court term. Stewart was an assistant professor of law at Southern Methodist University in 1956-1957.
