Barry Sullivan




Biography

Barry Sullivan graduated from Middlebury College and earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago School of Law. He clerked for the Hon. John Minor Wisdom of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit before entering private practice and government service. As an assistant Solicitor General of the United States, he argued a number of cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and he has also served as Special Assistant Attorney General of the State of Illinois.

At Washington and Lee School of Law, Sullivan taught American Public Law Process, Civil Procedure, Employment Practices, Pretrial Litigation, Remedies-Equity, Supreme Court Litigation, and Local Government Law. He also served as Dean of the School of Law from 1994 to 1999 and as Vice-President of the University from 1998 to 1999. Sullivan has also taught at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University School of Law, and the University of Warsaw. He presently holds the Cooney and Conway Chair in Advocacy at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
