Biography
James Burroughs Noell served as associate professor of law at Washington and Lee University School of Law during the academic year 1922-1923. Though records are not explicit, he probably taught some or all of the following: Torts, Carriers, Insurance, Municipal Corporations, Private Corporations, Conflict of Laws, and Bankruptcy.
Noell was born in North Carolina, but grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia. After graduating from Lynchburg High School, he entered Washington and Lee University receiving his B.A. degree in 1911. After earning a law degree from Harvard, Noell served in the U.S. military for fourteen months in France during World War I. Before joining the W&L law faculty, Noell was associated with the law firm Taylor, Jackson, Brophy, & Nash in New York city. Upon leaving his teaching post, he joined his father’s law practice in New Orleans. From 1925 to 1942, Noell managed Lone Pine Farm in Bedford, Virginia. In his retirement, Noell engaged in reading and research which sometimes took him abroad. He died in Lynchburg, Virginia February 3, 1985.
