Biography

Brant J. Hellwig is an expert in the field of federal taxation. He teaches a variety of tax courses, including Federal Income Taxation of Individuals, Partnership Taxation, Corporate Taxation, and Estate and Gift Taxation. His scholarship in the tax field is similarly varied, ranging from the income tax treatment of deferred compensation arrangements of corporate executives to the estate tax treatment of closely held business entities employed as trust substitutes. In addition to his law review articles, Prof. Hellwig recently published a coursebook in Federal Estate and Gift Taxation with his W&L Law colleague Prof. Robert Danforth. In addition to his interest in federal taxation, Prof. Hellwig frequently teaches the state law Trusts and Estates course.

Prof. Hellwig joined the W&L Law School faculty in 2012. Prior to that, he served on the faculty at the University of South Carolina School of Law for 10 years. Prof. Hellwig began his academic career in 2001 as an Acting Assistant Professor in the NYU Graduate Tax Program. Prior to that, Prof. Hellwig practiced law with the firm of Bell, Davis & Pitt, P.A. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and he served as the Law Clerk to the Hon. Juan F. Vasquez of the United States Tax Court.
