The Washington and Lee University School of Law Moot Court Program
One of the oldest and largest student-run organizations at Washington & Lee, the Moot Court Program provides law students the opportunity to develop and refine their oral and written advocacy skills by working individually and collaboratively. The Moot Court Executive Board (“MCEB”), comprised of ten third-year law students, administers five competitions: the John W. Davis Moot Court Competition, the Robert J. Grey, Jr. Negotiations Competition, the Mock Trial Competition, the Client Counseling Competition, and the Representation in Mediation Competition. All second- and third-year students, excluding MCEB members, may compete, and first-year students may participate as witnesses, clients, timekeepers, and bailiffs.

The MCEB oversees the preliminary, quarterfinal, and semifinal rounds of all competitions and invites justices, judges, politicians, practitioners, or professors to preside over final rounds. Competitions have attracted prominent jurists, including Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Justice Byron R. White, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., then Judge Roberts, and Justice Antonin G. Scalia, then Judge Scalia. (For a description of W&L’s Moot Court history, please select history tab).
Winners and select competitors represent Washington & Lee in regional, national, and international competitions. W&L students have recently participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the National Trial Competition, and the ABA Appellate Advocacy, Negotiations, Client Counseling, and Mediation Competitions.
