The Martin P. Burks Moot Court Competition was started in 1953 and was last held in 1989. Martin Parks Burks graduated from Washington College in 1870 and from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1872. In 1899, Burks became a professor at the Washington and Lee University School of Law. He served as dean from 1903 until 1917, when he was elected to the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. From 1917 until 1928, the year of his death, he sat on Virginia’s highest court.

In addition to the Burks Moot Court Competition, the Burks Scholar program and the Burks Senate of the Delta Theta Pi law fraternity are named after Burks.
