Kirgis, the Law Alumni Association Professor of Law, earned his B.A. from Yale University and J.D. from University of California (Berkeley) graduating Order of the Coif. At UC-Berkeley he served as Assistant Notes and Comments Editor for the California Law Review. He was admitted to practice in Colorado and Virginia and served as judge advocate, U.S. Air Force, 1961-64. He then went on to work for Covington & Burling, Washington, D.C. before entering academia. He has taught at the University of Colorado, U.C.L.A., the University of Michigan, Cornell, the University of Virginia, the University of Georgia, and Hastings. At Washington and Lee he has served as Director of the Lewis Law Center, Dean and Professor.
