On April 16 during Law Reunion 2011, Washington and Lee School of Law announced the recipients of the Outstanding Alum Award and the inaugural Volunteer of the Year Award.

Tom Millhiser '81L received the 2011 Outstanding Alum Award to honor his achievements as a member of the legal profession and his service to W&L Law. A 1971 graduate of Georgetown University, Millhiser is a summa cum laude graduate of the W&L School of Law, where he was a member of Order of the Coif and served as Note and Comment editor of the Washington and Lee Law Review

Millhiser is a retired partner with Hunton & Williams, in Richmond, Virginia, where his practice focused on wills, trusts, and estates.  He is a fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for close to 20 years, as well as in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Millhiser served as a member of the W&L Law Council, including a term as President of the Law Council, as a member of Richmond area campaign committee, as Annual Fund Law Firm Liaison, and as Law Liaison for the Richmond Chapter. He continues to serve today on the George Washington Society and as a mentor to law students. In addition to his service to W&L, Tom currently serves as chairman of the board of trustees of The Hill School, in Pottstown, Pa.

This year the School also awarded for the first time the Volunteer of the Year Award, an honor created to recognize those individuals who go above and beyond in their service to W&L Law. The inaugural recipient is Nan Robertson Clarke '76L.

Clarke has served the School in a nearly every volunteer position available, including on the Charlotte campaign committee, as a Charlotte Chapter board member, on the Alumni Board, as a class agent, a SPEAK volunteer, and as the parents liaison for the Charlotte Chapter.  Clarke continues her service to W&L on the George Washington Society.

In addition, her work as a reunion volunteer this year was evident in the turnout of her classmates for this reunion and in fundraising success achieved by Clarke and her class in honor of their 35th Reunion.

A graduate of Sweet Briar College, Clarke was editor of Law News at W&L Law. She is married to W&L Law classmate Hal Clarke.

"We value the contributions these alumni and others make to the Law School," said Interim Dean Mark Grunewald. "Nan and Tom exemplify the committed and enthusiastic alumni body which is one of W&L's hallmarks."

Both the Millhisers and Clarkes will see their family legacy continue at W&L Law with the graduation of their children, Neal Millhiser and Robbie Clarke, both members of the Law Class of 2011.
