below: Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1986.

Notes and disclaimers, 10/12/2011: This collection of electonic copies has its origin in the scanning of files in response to research inquiries, rather than as a systematic project. For this reason there are a variety of presentations. One such is a collection of electrionic files for a given case, corresponding to the contents of physical folders in the archives. Another is one electronic file for an entire case. Some cases were split into parts to keep the files small enough to be send as email attachments in response to a given request.
These files are only now being reviewed for quality, but there are already some known issues. A few images, mostly containing handwriting, were read upside down. (We are now using more sophisticated scanning software.) About ninety percent of the scanned paper sheets are letter size, but there are some legal and oversize as well. Some of these larger and longer sheets were read in full by the scanner and some were not. These are now being reviewed. Contact the archives if you discover problems.
Consistent with the arrangement of the physical files, these electronic surrogates are arranged by Supreme Court term, and by docket number thereunder. Use your browser's "Find" feature to quickly locate case files by name.
Note to Mac users, 12/8/2011: If you are using Apple devices, open the files in the native Adobe Acrobat Reader. Using the default previewer has resulted in readability issues.
Cut-off handwriting, 5/17/12: Despite quality control efforts, incomplete or missing handwritten annotations from the extreme edges of documents -- especially the top quarter inch -- have been discovered. Unfortunately, we are in Rumsfeld-ian territory here with the "known unknowns," where one can see writing cut off, and the "unknown unknowns," where no fragments appear and the reader has no way of knowing something is missing. Please report any missing material you can discover. To reiterate from the initial disclaimer above, this is not a scanning project done to archival preservation standards. We attempt to be as though and complete in scanning as our resources allow. These scanned documents, however, should be considered surrogates, not unlike photocopies made in lieu of note taking.
U.S. v. U.S. District Court (70-153): If you used this file before 6/1/2013 you did not have access to the complete file. This has now been corrected. Contact the archives with any questions.
