Mr. Lyle W. Denniston has covered the Supreme Court for fifty-four years. During that time, he has covered one-quarter of all Justices ever to sit on the Court and has reported on the entire careers of ten of them. In 1948, he began his career as a legal journalist for the Otoe County Courthouse in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Since then, he has covered the law for sixty-four years. Currently, he serves as the lead reporter for SCOTUSblog, one of the most popular legal blogs and preeminent source for comprehensive coverage of the Court.
In addition, he has contributed to numerous books and journals, and is the author of The Reporter and the Law: Techniques for Covering the Courts. Mr. Denniston has taught classes on law, journalism, and the American constitutional history at American University, Georgetown University, Penn State University, and Johns Hopkins University.
Because of his long-standing coverage of the Court, he has earned the title “Dean Emeritus of the Supreme Court Press Corps.” He also enjoys the unique distinction of having earned a plaque in the Supreme Court press room. He is a native of Nebraska City, Nebraska, a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Georgetown University, where he earned a masters’ degree in political science and history.
