Connect to the Network
There are three major tasks to get your laptop ready for the W&L Network:
- Prepare your version of XP or Vista
- Configure your laptop for EMail access
- Configure your laptop for printing and network file access
*For students with Macintosh computers, we are currently working on a webpage for you to connect to the network*
1. Prepare your Laptop
- Go to Microsoft Update to make sure your laptop is up to date. If you have not done so already, be sure to change to Microsoft Update, and not just Windows Update.
- Install Symantec Antivirus from the Software Download Page
- Install Microsoft Office from the Software Download Page
NOTE: If the username and password on your Laptop match your network usename and password, you will NOT be prompted for passwords when you connect to W&L resources.
2. Configure File Server Access
Note: You should remove any Novell products. To remove NetDrive and iPrint, go to Control Panel -> add/remove programs. To remove the Novell Client, go to Control Panel -> Network Connection -> Right Click on Local Connection -> Uninstall Novell Client for Windows. Make sure that "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Print Sharing..." are selected.
- Right Click on "My Computer" and select "Map Network Drive".
- In the pull down box labeled "Drive", select which drive you wish to map.
- Put in the correct path in the "Folder" box. The following are available to you:
| DRIVE |
FUNCTION |
FOLDER |
| H: |
Your Home Folder |
"\\MFSLAW1\[CLASS YEAR]\[LOGIN NAME]" |
|
|
ie:\\MFSLAW1\2012L\Smith.J |
| L: |
Course Work |
"\\MFSLAW1\LDRIVE" |
- The "Reconnect at login" box is optional (but recommended).
- Select finish, which will then prompt you for your username and password.
- Your username is : AD[Login Name] or [login Name]@ad.wlu.edu
- Enter the information and the drive will be mapped.
- You can create a shortcut on your desktop to the mapped drive for easy access in the future. Right-click on the desktop -> New Short Cut ->Location is h: (or L:) -> Call it "H Drive" (or "L Drive)
- For access from off-campus see Remote Access.
- NOTES: Make sure your firewall is not blocking "File and Print" - if you are using the wireless network, make sure you are authenticated first, and can see web pages - if you cannot connect to the servers, try the computer lab first and see if you can log in and get your drives
3. Configure Printers
- Right Click on the desktop and select "New Shortcut"
- In the Location Field put "\\mpslaw1\printers" Select Next
- In the Name field, put "Law School Printers", Select Finish
- When asked for a username/password, put in "AD" or "@ad.wlu.edu" with your password.
- Click on Start, Select "Printer and Faxes" (for Vista, click on Start and put Printers in the seach box).
- Select "Add a Printer" on the top of the right side menu.
- Select "Next", then select the second option, "A network printer" and select "Next".
- Select the second box and type "\\MPSLAW1", You may need to authenticate (use ad[username])
- A list of printers should appear in the box. If it does not, remove the last "" and add it back in. Then the list should show up.
- Select the printer of your choice and click "Next". A box will appear asking you to continue, select "yes".
- The printer is successfully installed.
