Top Eleven Technology Features
- Core Services. The School of Law provides network document storage and network printing for all students, all accessible with a single password. Cutting edge virtual desktop services are also available that allow access to all network resources from anywhere you can get a network connection. We set up your initial outook.com email account, which is hosted by Microsoft. NOTE: If you change your outlook.com password it will no longer be synchronized with your W&L network password unless you change it also.
- Wireless Network. All public areas, including student carrels and classrooms, have access to the wireless network. This allows students to access the internet, their email, and their remote documents from wherever they like to work. To configure your laptop to automatically login to our wireless network, go to http://wireless.wlu.edu.
- Public Computers and Printers. There are computers for student use distributed throughout the building. In addition, most clinics and student groups have computers in their workspaces and printers nearby. Students who do not own a laptop computer can reserve a laptop during exam periods. Whether using your own laptop or a public PC, students also have access to several high speed, high quality laser printers (including a color laser printer).
- High Speed Internet. Washington and Lee has a 1Gbps connection to the internet.
- Borrow Commonly Needed Technology Items at the Library's Circulation Desk. A limited number of useful items, like power supplies and external video connectors are available for short-term loan.
- Free Software.Washington and Lee provides students with a choice of Microsoft Office 2010, Office 2011 (Mac) and several antivirus software recommendations. Students can load this software on their computers for free.
- HelpDesk in Building. As a service to the student body, Technology Services is available in the building to help students troubleshoot their computers. We also have a Dell Certified Technician on staff. Email us at lawtech@wlu.edu for more information on helpdesk hours, an appointment or general questions
- A voice in the process. Each of the three class years has two representatives who volunteer to work on the Law Student Technology Advisory Committee, which participates in steering the development of technology deployment at the Law School.
- Media Services. The media services staff is available to assist students, faculty and staff with instructional technology. They will also, with permission from the instructor, video record any class you request. Contact: lawmedia@wlu.edu.
- Environmental Concerns. The School of Law has taken steps to make sure that technology is used in ways that minimize damage to the environment. For example, we have switched to flat panel monitors to reduce power consumptions, we have added duplex printing capability to conserve paper, and we provide recycle bins at all printers. We also participate in the campus Techno Trash program, the proceeds of which benefit Project Nicaragua. Want to know where to recycle in the area?
- Good Local Internet Service. Lexington is both rural and small, yet students living in Lexington have many good choices for broadband. There are cable, ISDN/DSL, and WiFi services available from a variety of vendors. (Although we occasionally update this list, you may want to do your own search for resources.)
