Julie Youngman is Assistant Professor of Business Administration in the Williams School and adjunct professor at the Washington and Lee School of Law. Prof. Youngman also serves as the head of W&L's Law, Justice, and Society Program.
Before joining the faculty at Washington and Lee, Professor Youngman practiced law for 20 years, most recently as a Senior Attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. At SELC, she represented non-profit environmental and community organizations in state and federal litigation as well as in administrative and legislative venues. Her work focused on the protection of water quality, water quantity, and coastal resources in the southeastern United States. Prior to joining SELC, Professor Youngman spent many years in private practice in Washington, DC and Raleigh, NC, most recently as a partner at Ellis & Winters LLP, representing a variety of business clients in complex commercial disputes, including media interests, general contractors, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and textile companies. She also clerked for the Honorable J. Dickson Phillips on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and served as a certified mediator in North Carolina, as chair of the North Carolina Bar Association Appellate Rules Committee, and on the boards of several non-profit organizations.
Prior to attending law school, Julie served as an officer in the U.S. Army for four years, stationed in Germany and Texas. Julie received her B.S.in Zoology 1987 from Duke University, and her M.A. in 1994 from the Duke University School of the Environment. She received her J.D. in 1994 from Duke University Law School, where she graduated with high honors, and served as Managing Editor of the Duke Law Journal, staff editor of the Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum, and president of the Environmental Law Society.
