For the last eight years Olan has worked as a law clerk for the Hon. Rudolph Bumgardner III and the Hon. Elizabeth A. McClanahan on the Court of Appeals of Virginia. In this capacity, Olan researched criminal, domestic, and administrative law issues and assisted with the training of new law clerks.
From 1994 until 1997 Olan was executive director of Project Horizon, a non-profit domestic violence shelter and prevention agency based in Lexington, Virginia. During her time with Project Horizon, Olan oversaw a tremendous period of growth for the organization, increasing funding by 400% and adding 4.5 full-time employees.
Olan received her B.A. from Oberlin College in 1987 and her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 1992. Following law school, she served as a law clerk for the Superior Court of Massachusetts in Boston.
Olan lives in Lexington with her husband George Bent, associate professor of art at Washington and Lee University, and her three children, Miles, Catalena and Liam.
