Writing Competitions
The National Lesbian and Gay Law Association sponsors an annual writing competition that offers a first prize of $3000. The paper must be about a cutting edge legal issue affecting the LGBTI community. More info is available here.
The Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law sponsors an annual writing competition for student notes focusing on LGBT legal issues. More info is available at http://www.law.ucla.edu/Williamsinstitute/publications/DAStudent.html

Career Fairs
Lavender Law Conference
The Lavender Law Career Fair and Conference (sponsored by the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association) will be held in Chicago, IL this year on September 6th - 8th. Each year, the Office of Career Planning and Professional Development sponsors one to two students to attend this event by reimbursing their registration fee and reasonable travel expenses. Details about the conference can be found on the Lavender Law website at www.lavenderlaw.org.
Students interested in attending should note the dates of the conference overlap with the last two days of the first OCI session. Anyone interested in attending and submitting a request that OCP sponsor them should contact Tara Miller by e-mail as soon as possible.
Bay Area Diversity Career Fair
Held in San Francisco, this career fair attracts employers from the Bay Area's most prominent law firms and government agencies. This year it will be held on Saturday, August 9th. The registration deadline is June 20. More information is available here: www.sfbar.org/careerfair

Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson
Graham Garl G. Cooper, their chief diversity officer, sent us some information outlining the firm's (which has offices in Pittsburgh, Boston, London, New York and Washington, D.C., to name a few) committment to maintaining a diverse workforce and actively promoting an environment that embraces LGBT students as well as students of diverse ethnic, religious and other backgrounds. The materials by the board include Mr. Cooper's letter, the firm's diversity mission statement and a copy of their diversity newsletter, which contains an interesting article about an LGBT job fair they helped pioneer in NYC. McDermott, Will, & Emery LLP
McDermott has formed an LGBT committee for the whole firm and is looking to recruit LGBT people. The firm has offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, New York, DC, and Miami, among other locations. King & Spalding is offering a Diversity Fellowship to 2Ls. Those selected receive $10,000 and a summer position at the office of their choice. Heller Ehrman LLP
Heller Ehrman is offering four Diversity Fellowships to 1Ls. Those selected will receive a paid summer associate position in 2008 as well as a $7500 scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Students can apply to work in Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Silicon Valley, or Washington D.C. The application deadline is Friday, January 18, 2008.
