Where should I stay in Roanoke, VA if I am flying to ROA airport the night before Open House and want to stay in an airport hotel?

If you plan to fly to Roanoke, VA (airport code ROA) the night before your Open House and ride the law school's 8am shuttle from the airport to Lexington on the morning of your Open House, this is a listing of ROA airport hotels with complimentary shuttle to/from the airport: https://www.flyroa.com/local-hotels.

Alternatively, as required Open House programming is 8:30am - 2:35pm, you could visit Lexington only for the day of your Open House. Please see our website for the tentative in-person Open House schedule of events.

Travel

How should I plan to get to/from Lexington?

Please visit the university's webpage regarding travel to Lexington. Lexington is easily accessible by car and the town itself is very walkable.

Note that the Admissions Office recommends avoiding non-refundable travel or lodging arrangements, in case alterations to plans become necessary.

What if I need to fly to the area?

Roanoke (ROA) airport is the closest airport to Lexington, approximately 1 hour from campus. Other area airports include Charlottesville (CHO - One hour and 15 minutes from campus), Richmond (RIC - Two hours and 15 minutes from campus) and Dulles (IAD - Three hours from campus depending on traffic).

The law school is pleased to provide limited shuttle service from the Roanoke Airport (ROA) for attendees who request shuttle service during registration. Requests to be on the Open House airport shuttle MUST be made in advance during event registration. A pick-up will be offered from ROA at 8am on the mornings of Saturday, March 9 and April 6. A return to ROA will be offered at the 5pm conclusion of programming on each Saturday.  Please contact Admissions prior to making your airline reservations if you have any questions regarding the airport shuttle and arrival/departure times.

We strongly encourage those planning to take the shuttle on the morning of their Open House to arrive in Roanoke the night before and stay in an area hotel.

The law school cannot offer shuttle service from other area airports. However, parking around Lexington is very manageable for students who wish to get rental cars. Rental car fees are eligible under the transportation reimbursement (see below).

Are Uber or Lyft readily available in Lexington and to/from the area airports?

There is very minimal Uber or Lyft presence in Lexington and the surrounding area. We DO NOT recommend relying on these transportation options during your time in the area, or to get to/from the local airports.

Can I walk around Lexington?

Yes! Lexington is an extremely easy town to walk around and accommodations within downtown Lexington would be within walking distance of the law school.  Please contact Admissions with additional questions.

Reimbursement for Travel and Lodging

Is reimbursement for travel and lodging expenses available for admitted students attending an in-person Open House?

All accepted students attending an Open House are eligible for up to $500 transportation reimbursement for documented transportation expenses (airfare, train, rental car, milage, etc.), and up to $200 lodging reimbursement for documented hotel or other lodging expenses (AirBnB, etc.). Transportation and lodging reimbursement caps cannot be combined; each cap is separate, for a separate set of expenses.

The Travel and Lodging Reimbursement Request Form is accessible here.

Note that those requesting reimbursement for mileage should include a printout (such as from Google Maps, etc.) detailing their starting location for their trip to/from Lexington.

This request, together with supporting receipts, must be received no later than April 15. See an example hotel receipt here.
