48 Hours in Lexington

What is it like to visit Lexington as a prospective law student?  Here are our ideas and suggestions.

Arrive on Friday...

Go to Purveyor's on Main for free wine tastings from 5:00-7:00pm. Taste up to four unique wines, nibble on samples of crackers and cheese, and mingle with locals and law students.

Then, explore downtown Lexington's many dinner options.

We'd suggest going to...

Heliotrope Brewery. This favorite downtown business opened in December 2019. Along with beer and wine, it serves fluffy, artisan wood-fire pizzas made by bread experts (the crust is incredible) with unique toppings (try the hot kale honey pizza) as well as classics (margarita). The ingredients are seasonal and sourced from local farms.

If both of those places are crowded, you're sure to find a table at Napa Thai, a causal spot that is also popular for take-out, or Brew Ridge Taps, which has 18 taps of craft beer on draft, plus a few options for wine and cider, and deli sandwiches (available as a wrap or wafflewich) or salads.

On Saturday...

Spend your day exploring the law school and the university.  Start your morning with a locally roasted coffee from the Lexington Coffee Shop which opens at 8am and has a "mug wall" for frequent customers.  If the weather permits, the surrounding area includes options for golf, river rafting, hiking and biking.  If you have extra time, be sure to explore the area shops, including Ladles and Linens (kitchen gadgets and cooking classes), Just Games Lexington (board games for purchase or rent, plus items for disc golf), Pumpkinseeds (local boutique store), and The Bookery (our local book store).  Then, peruse downtown for a bite to eat.

Taps is a casual but swanky bar and lounge that also serves dinner, with an excellent burger, fresh fish tacos, and other sandwiches and salads. The restaurant is a part of The Georges, a boutique inn in downtown Lexington.

For dessert, go to Sweet Things, a homemade ice cream shop that is cash only. Their most popular flavor is Oreo, but you can sample anything you want. The shop is currently owned and run by a W&L alum.

If you're still out and about, see a movie for $8 at the Lexington movie theater on W. Nelson street, and relax in some lush, brand-new recliner chairs (you can lean almost all the way back). The later movies usually start around 9:30 or 10:00 p.m.

On Sunday Morning...

Jumpstart your Sunday morning by taking a walk on the Woods Creek Trail, which has an access point at the back of the law school. There are multiple spots to get on and off the trail, so you can do one section, or the whole trail down and back (4 miles) before walking downtown for breakfast.

For a light breakfast, there's Pronto, a euro-inspired coffee shop and bakery with espresso drinks, the best drip coffee in town, croissants and other pastries, gelato, and baguette sandwiches.  Or for a heartier meal, go to Niko's, which serves a traditional diner breakfast in the morning, serving eggs, bacon and buttermilk pancakes, among other things.

Hope to see you visiting soon!
