About

Thomas E. Scarr is an adjunct professor at Washington and Lee University School of Law, teaching Medical Professional Liability in the fall of 2026. He brings over four decades of experience as a lawyer, judge, mediator, and arbitrator to the classroom.

Scarr was recently Chief Judge of the Intermediate Court of Appeals of West Virginia, where he served from 2022 to 2024 after being appointed as one of the court's inaugural judges. Before joining the bench, he practiced for more than 40 years in private practice, concentrating on complex civil litigation, labor and employment law, appellate advocacy, and alternative dispute resolution.

A former President of the West Virginia State Bar, Judge Scarr has been active in numerous professional and judicial organizations and has frequently lectured on litigation, appellate practice, professionalism, and judicial administration. He currently serves as a mediator and arbitrator and also teaches at William & Mary Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Judge Scarr earned his BA, with distinction, from the University of Virginia and his JD from William & Mary Law School.
