About

Tony Giorno is a retired Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Western District of Virginia. During his tenure in WDVA, Tony served as civil chief, First Assistant United States Attorney and Acting United States Attorney. As a trial attorney, he prosecuted white collar crimes, racketeering, violent crimes and human trafficking offenses. He has defended the United States in Bivens actions, tort and employment disputes and has briefed and argued a number of cases in the federal and state courts of appeal.

From February 2018 until April 2019, Tony served a detail assignment as an Assistant Director of Civil Programs at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina. In that capacity, he prepared and presented programs to attorneys and investigators on a broad range of criminal and civil topics. Through the Department's OPDAT program, he assisted in training foreign prosectors and investigators in Europe and Asia. He returned to the Roanoke USAO in April 2019 as Senior Litigation Counsel. In that role, he mentored and worked with new AUSAs to conduct investigations and present cases to federal juries in the district. From December 2020 until December 2021, he served as a Deputy at the EOUSA General Counsel's Office in Washington.

Before joining the United States Attorney's Office, Tony spent eighteen years in private practice in Virginia, representing corporate and government clients. During that time, he served three terms as the elected Commonwealth's Attorney for Patrick County, Virginia.

Tony is a graduate of the William and Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law, where he worked as a staff member on the William and Mary Law Review and a member of the W&M National Moot Court Team. He is an active member of the Virginia Bar and has served on the faculty of the state Supreme Court Law School Professionalism training course. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
