Tax Section

Eligibility: The competition is open to any law school student currently enrolled in a law, or joint law and business or public policy, or LLM program. Each student may submit only one paper. Coauthored papers (with no more than two authors) will be accepted. All submissions should be the original work of the author. The use of artificial intelligence programs such as ChatGPT is not permitted.

Topic: Submissions should focus on a current area of interest to practicing attorneys in federal, state, or international tax law or policy such as commentary on recent or pending litigation or legislation.

Format: Entries should be a minimum of 2,500 words and a maximum of 5,000 words, including footnotes. Citations should be formatted as footnotes in accordance with the current version of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation. Bibliographies and reference lists are not allowed. Articles should be submitted as Microsoft Word documents.

Deadline: Entries must be received no later than August 15, 2024.

Submission Process: Entries must be submitted to Tiffany Burton, Esq. via email at tburton@reesbroome.com referencing the Student Writing Competition in the subject line. The author's
name, telephone number, mailing address, and email address must be included in the email submitting the article. Do not include any personally identifying information in the article.

Evaluation: The Virginia State Bar - Tax Section Newsletter Committee will blindly evaluate entries on originality, readability, organization, reasoning, and overall quality of content.

Prizes: Monetary prizes will be awarded to the top three (3) winning entries as follows:

  • First: $1,500
  • Second: $1,000
  • Third: $ 500

Additionally, winning entries will be published in the Virginia State Bar - Tax Section Newsletter, including the Winners' names and schools. Winning entrants will be subject to all Virginia State Bar editorial process and publication policies.

Notification: Entrants will generally be notified that their submission has been received within ten (10) business days of submission and notified of competition results by October 2024.

Conditions: Submissions must not have been published in any other publication or forum at the time of submission. If a student accepts an offer of publication before notification of the results of this competition, the student must notify the Virginia State Bar - Tax Section Newsletter Committee at the below contact.
